Mr. Chuck Copus has been the Director of Bands at Shelby Junior High for the past 22 years. Prior to teaching band at Shelby he directed at Eppler Junior High and several elementary schools. He has also worked in New Haven and East Detroit Schools teaching band.

A graduate of Utica High School, Mr. Copus received his Music Education degree from Central Michigan University. He completed his bachelor’s degree by doing his student teaching under Norbert Sobolewski at Stevenson High School. He earned his Masters of Education in 2008.

Mr. Copus enjoys playing trombone. He has played in brass quintets in the past, and is currently a member of the New Horizons Community Band through Michigan State University.

The time spent at Shelby has been a privilege for Mr. Copus. The students he has taught have enriched his life. Teaching music is more than a profession, it’s a lot of fun. The joy of working with 7th, 8th and 9th graders is inspiring. The many ensembles that have competed in Solo and Ensemble and the bands that have competed in MSBOA District 16 Band Festivals have delivered amazing success and provided fabulous memories. Mr. Copus is proud to represent the music program at Shelby Junior High and for Utica Community Schools.
